The Bears’ first game of the new year was away to Leicester Cobras. The first quarter was a scrappy game, with both teams showing the rustiness of the Christmas break. The Bears went into an early lead but were unable to make any headway and Cobras came back to finish the quarter with only a single basket between them Cobras 14 – 12 Bears.
The Bears came out stronger in the second quarter, playing a harder defence but were unable to make any progression with the score but were able to slowly pull away and take lead going into the halftime break, the highlight of the quarter being Jacob Robinsons buzzer-beating basket from his own half to see the scores at halftime Cobras 19 – 26 Bears.
The Cobras came out determined in the third quarter, playing a full-court press to try and pull back the score. But the Bears were able to overcome it, with Dan Gill and Ben Haigh breaking down the defence and keeping the Bears in front. Scores at the end of the quarter seen Bears still with a slight lead of Cobras 30 – 40 Bears.
The Bears saw out the last quarter and kept their lead going basket for basket with the Cobras to the final buzzer with the scores Cobras 42 – 52 Bears.
After the game coach Masterson said “ I’d like to congratulate the Cobras today as they fought all the way and gave us a real test today. Although disappointed with the display today, we still won so have to be happy about that. We have some big games coming up and we need to be so much better for them or we will get punished.”
