The Bears wheelchair basketball club clinched the top spot on Sunday in their last game of the 2017-18 season and booked their spot in this year’s B.W.B National League Play Offs in Sheffield on the 26th/27th May. At the same time they also secured their promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history
From the tip-off the Bears were in an upbeat mood after last Sundays win against their closest rivals London Titans. The Bears took control the game with Ian Beach, Ben Haigh and Jacob Robinson finding their shooting range to shoot Bears into an early lead at the end of the quarter C.W.B.A 2 8 – 16 Bears.
After the break the Coventry team game out strong With impressive shooting from Coventry’s exciting young prospect, Tom Cutts, C.W.B.A were able to make a comeback but were just not able to pull back the early lead the Bears had amassed. At the end of the half the scores were C.W.B.A 2 15 – 27 Bears
The third quarter saw the Bears change their line up and give some game time to Invictus players Rick Powell and Andy Roberts, who were able to keep up the lead that had been built up in the previous quarters. The Bears were able to go into the last quarter still with a healthy lead of C.W.B.A 2 31 – 44 Bears.
The final quarter was all Bears who also introduced Bears junior player to the action, and were able to build even further on their lead and see the game out to the final buzzer and become division one South champions and the final score C.W.B.A 2 35 – 68 Bears.
After the game Coach Masterson said “I’d first like to thank C.W.B.A for two wonderful games today. I know I’ve said it a lot this season but I’m immensely proud of this team. Six years ago we had six registered players and entering the league in division 3 and we now are entering the Premier League, playing against the top teams featuring international players. We can now look forward the national play-offs again and see what happens there.”

Bears 3 started the day off when they faced Coventry’s third team but were not able to get the win against a strong Coventry team. The Bears fought to stay close to Coventry, but with their influential player Aaron Grant picking up early fouls and having to sit out much of the game on the bench, Coventry were able to pull away from the Bears. The Bears were also able to feature their other talented junior Ellan Fraser and give her much need experience of league basketball. Coach Robinson said after the game, “Great performance from a young squad against a team with age on their side. Great to see how everybody has developed as the season has gone on. A very successful season and I couldn’t be happier with where the squad is at now.”
